Session Description: Cultural institutions are advancing sustainable practices within their organizations. Many are also presenting programming on climate change and consumer impact on our environment. Cultural stores strive to present products that reflect exhibits and educational efforts, so naturally, sourcing and offering sustainable products would be the answer, but it’s only part of it. This session will explore sustainable retailing beyond just products and merchandising and delve into sustainable retail operations. We will talk about the ongoing efforts to create a dialogue about climate and environment at the Peabody Essex Museum in its exhibits and internal operations and how the shop has partnered with museum curators and educators to align the shop’s offerings with the museum’s goals. The panel will be moderated by Jamie Larkin, Assistant Professor of Creative and Cultural Industries, Chapman University. It will include Jane Winchell, Director of the Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center for the Peabody Essex Museum; Queen Allotey-Pappoe, Fashion Designer who is focusing on creating sustainable communities through craftsmanship; and Victor Oliveira, Director of Retail for the Peabody Essex Museum.
