Decolonizing our Museum Stores: Practicing DEAI in Retail Merchandising

Presenter: Julie Steiner, Senior Director of Admissions and Retail Operations, The Barnes Foundation
Knowledge Standards: Merchandise Planning, Visitor Relations, Operations, Human Resources, Marketing & Communications, Strategic Management

Session Description: As retail buyers, museum store professionals wield financial decision-making power in our museums as well as in the broader retail and manufacturing industries. How can we leverage this position to make meaningful differences, both within our individual organizations and collectively? What responsibilities do museums have to our audiences when selecting product to represent diverse cultural collections? What does "buying ethically" look like in the commercial marketplace? Can a museum store be "anti-racist?" These questions and many others will be presented for interrogation and discussion, using case studies from recent exhibitions and new practices for modern merchandising strategies.
